Program Description
This program is designed to prepare graduates for
employment in the automotive industry as apprentice mechanics, parts
people, service station attendants or specialists in one of the many areas
in, or jobs related to, the automotive industry.
Your New Skills
You will be introduced to the theory and practice of automotive repair
and maintenance and you will study the vital parts of the internal
combustion engine and power transmission. You will learn basic electrical
concepts and you will practice testing, maintaining, adjusting and
repairing batteries, alternators, starters, wiring and ignition systems as
well as accessories. You will be shown methods of scientifically
diagnosing automotive malfunctions and the techniques of troubleshooting.
You will practice with special machines, instruments and oscilloscopes for
examination of exhaust emissions, fuel and other systems.
Opportunities
There are upwards of 15,000 automotive mechanics
employed in the San Francisco Bay Area, and there is a heavy demand for
skilled mechanics who display a special pride in their craftsmanship.
There will be many openings created in the next few years by mechanics who
will retire. Opportunities exist among automobile and truck dealers,
independent repair garages, vehicle fleet operations, many state, local
and federal government agencies and service stations.
