Matt Borchert, Head Coach
Matt Borchert, Head Coach

There’s a lot of pride in being associated with the Solano Community College women’s basketball program. And no one knows that more than ninth-year head coach Matt Borchert.

Coach Matt has continued a long history of success that defined the program long before he arrived in the Spring of 2000.

Coach Matt is 155-101 as the Falcons’ head coach. The 40-year-old hasn’t had a losing season and has posted five 20-win seasons in his tenure at Solano. More importantly than the wins and losses, he has moved on xx players to four-year universities on athletic scholarships which is how success is defined at the community college level.

Coach Matt has coached three WBCA Kodak Honorable Mention All-Americans, two Bay Valley Conference MVPs, 17 BVC all-conference selections and three all-state picks.

More importantly, once his players leave Solano, they are ready to play at the next level.

For the Love of the Game

Coach Matt’s success is due to the fact that he’s a student of the game. He strives to learn more about the ever-changing women’s game by watching videos, attending clinics and watching women’s and girls basketball games across the state as well as on television. Therefore, his practices are always fresh, exciting and challenging.

Coach Matt is well-known in the community and is a staple at girls basketball games in Solano County and beyond. He’s a huge basketball fan and loves learning new ways to teach the game to the enthusiastic student-athletes who come to Solano with the hopes of improving their game.

On the court, Coach Matt is one of the most passionate and driven coaches around. His refuse-to-lose attitude rubs off on his players and he in turn gets the most out of them in practices and games.

Coach Matt has coached California community college women’s basketball for more than half his life and loves that he can teach the ins and outs of the game to athletes who desire to play at the next level. He believes that in order for his players to improve as athletes and people he must challenge them in every facet of the game as well as their lives.

By playing one of the toughest schedules in the state year in and year out, Coach Matt ensures that his players are going up against the best teams and therefore the best players in California. It’s the only way they’ll be ready to move on and contribute right away to a four-year program.

Preparation is key as well. That’s why his practices are very intense and structured – a drill is not complete until everyone gets it right. Solano runs complex offensive and defensive systems that are implemented throughout the season. Because Coach Matt believes in a run-and-gun style offense, lots of players see the court and are expected to contribute at all times.

Solano’s preseason and offseason conditioning programs are structured as well. The experienced assistant coaching staff puts together a combination of weights, pylometrics, running and core fitness training that keeps the athletes in shape year-round.

At Solano

Coach Matt is a two-time Bay Valley Conference Coach of the Year, having won the award in both years he led Solano to the conference title.

The 2005-06 squad was the most memorable of Coach Matt’s career so far. He won his first conference title as a head coach, won his 100th career game at Solano and posted the best winning percentage of his career.

In 2007-08, Coach Matt took his team up against some of the state’s best teams. The Falcons went the distance in three of four tournaments they played in, including playing four straight games at the prestigious College of Sequoias tournament in Visalia. The preparation that the team faced in the preseason helped the team cruise through its Bay Valley Conference schedule, going 14-0. The Falcons were the first team in program history to go undefeated in conference play.

Coach Matt’s teams are extremely fun to watch because of the up tempo style of play. They also tend to have a flare for the dramatic as evidenced by the 03-04 team’s last-second win at North power College of Marin; the team’s victory at the Chaffey Tournament in 2000, which gave the program its first-ever state No. 1 ranking. Later that year, the team won its own Solano Showdown in a thrilling finish and advanced to the championship game of the De Anza Classic.

In 2005-06, Solano helped its cause en route to the BVC title by beating rival Contra Costa College in San Pablo in front of a raucous crowd on a last-second half-court heave.

Coach Matt is not only an advocate for women’s basketball, but for community colleges. He’s on the Solano Community College Hall of Fame committee, a BVC Executive Board Member, and the California Community College WBCA President and Treasurer.

Coach Matt has developed several young athletes through his highly successful basketball camps and clinics. In fact, former Solano standout Angela Franklin (07-08) was a frequent camper during her high school days at Vanden High in Fairfield. Several of the area’s top high school basketball players attended the camp prior to their prep fame.

Coach Matt is also a member of the WBCA and attends the NCAA Women’s Final Four developing relationships with four-year coaches across the country.

Borchert is the middle of three children; his sisters are Bonnie and Debbie. Coach Matt and his wife, Angela, live in Vacaville with their daughter, Diana, who was born June 23, 2005.

George Molina, Assistant Coach
George Molina, Assistant Coach

George Molina begins his sixth year at Solano and is the longest tenured assistant coach in Matt Borchert’s coaching career.

Coach George is a very valuable member of the coaching staff, playing a big role in contiguous district recruiting of high school players.

Because he’s been with Coach Matt so long, Coach George knows exactly what kind of player to recruit that fits into the Solano system academically and athletically and whose personality will mesh with the rest of the team and coaches.

Coach George also plays a big role in scouting opponents and evaluation and development of offensive and defensive systems.

Coach George followed the same route as Coach Matt to Solano, having served as an assistant coach to the late Mike Gervasoni at De Anza College in Cupertino from 2001-2003. Prior to the, he was the assistant women’s coach at Mission College in San Jose from 1998-2000.

A native of San Jose, Coach George played high school basketball at Overfelt in San Jose before moving on to De Anza to continue his athletic and academic careers.

At De Anza, he played for Frank Carbajal, a CCCMBCA past president and Hall of Fame coach who he still turns to for advice. George earned his AA from De Anza in 19994.

Coach George found his passion for coaching and after De Anza became the assistant boys varsity coach at Wilcox High in Santa Clara while also serving as the assistant coach for the girls team.

Coach George also lend a helping hand with the volleyball and softball teams.

Coach George is an active member of the CCCWBCA and is the Director of the Sophomore Showcase held annually at the State Tournament.

Coach George, who Coach Matt affectionately calls a ‘gym rat,' is single and lives in San Jose.

Kim Nunley, Assistant Coach
Kim Nunley, Assistant Coach

Kim Nunley enters her third year as an assistant to Coach Matt.

Coach Kim’s contributions to the program are endless and her tireless efforts are a big reason the program has grown and continues to be successful.

In addition to time spent in practice and games, Coach Kim is the program’s strength and conditioning coach. She organizes the spring, summer and fall workouts and gets the team warmed up with a complete exercise routine prior to each game.

Coach Kim is also the community relations director, publishing the team’s bi-monthly newsletter, The Falcon Flyer; working with the Solano webmaster to update the team’s website with stats, game information, bios and photos; and monitoring the team’s blog.

Coach Kim and her wife, April, also produced the highly popular recruiting video and end of season highlight film, which took on a different look in 2008.

Coach Kim is also on the recruiting trail, using her local connections and prior experience as a community college student-athlete to ensure that local basketball players stay local and attend Solano.

During her two years at Solano (1998-2000), Coach Kim was a two-time Falcon Award winner, which is awarded to the player with the highest GPA. She served as team captain her sophomore year, earned the coach’s award in both seasons, was an honorable mention all-BVC selection and earned a scholarship to play at Chapman University.

While at the small school located in Orange County, Coach Kim served as team captain for two years and helped her team advance to the NCAA Division III Sweet 16 as a senior.

Coach Kim earned her BA in kinesiology with an emphasis in physical education. She went on to Cal State Fullerton where she earned her MA in kinesiology with an emphasis in sports performance. Prior to coming to Solano, Coach Kim worked as a strength and conditioning coach for six years, helping train athletes.

Coach Kim lives in Walnut Creek with her wife, April.

Kate Shipp, Assistant Coach
Kate Shipp, Assistant Coach

Kate Shipp is in her first year as an assistant coach for Matt Borchert. She’s the first of Coach Matt’s former players to take a seat on his bench as an assistant coach.

Kate’s energy and enthusiasm will be helpful to this year’s young team. She will work primarily with the guards, but will help in all aspects of the program, using her connections as a Napa High grad to help recruit in that area.

Kate graduated in May 2008 from Azusa Pacific University with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. She had a stellar two-year basketball career for the Cougars, twice helping her team advance to the NAIA National Tournament in Jackson, Tenn.

During Kate’s senior year at APU, she was one of the Golden State Athletic Conference leaders in 3-point field goal percentage. Ironic since while at Solano she was not considered one of the team’s 3-point threats.

Kate was a two-time all-Bay Valley Conference honoree as a Falcon. She was an integral part of the team that won the 2006 BVC championship.

At Napa High, Kate played two years varsity and was an all-county selection as a senior. The Indians won the MEL championship in Kate’s final season.

Kate is working on her teaching credential at Touro University in Vallejo.
