Solano women open with loss
WALNUT — Four Falcons scored in double figures but the Solano Community College women's basketball team lost in the first round of the Mt. San Antonio College Tip-Off Classic 60-59 to Orange Coast College Nov. 13. Welana Toki, Fairfield grad Angelica Negron and Alitrinette Scott each scored 12 points for the Falcons (0-1) while Kate Shipp added 10 points. Solano fell behind 10 points with just more than two minutes to go in the game. The Falcons scored the last nine points of the game, but ran out of time. "It was a great comeback," said Solano coach Matt Borchert. "We almost got 'em."

Solano rolls over Saddleback
WALNUT — The Solano Community College women's basketball team rebounded from its season-opening loss, defeating Saddleback, 68-53, Saturday in the Mt. SAC Tipoff Classic. Angelica Negron led the way for Solano, scoring 15 points. Alitrinette Scott and Welana Toki added 13. Toki also had five rebounds, four assists and six steals, while Scott contributed five rebounds and five steals. "It's always nice to get the first win and after yesterday's loss, it feels good to get back in the saddle," said Solano coach Matt Borchert. The Falcons got off to a fast start, taking an 8-2 lead and never looked back, controlling the tempo the entire game. "I was real happy with the intensity," Borchert said. Solano improved to 1-1.

Three Falcons scored in double figures led by Alitrinette Scott who scored 20 points and was named to the all-tournament team. Solano's Arielle Salvador added 13 while Welana Toki added 10. ROCKVILLE - The Solano Community College women's basketball team got a well-rounded effort in a 62-35 win over Siskiyous Nov. 23. Alitrinette Scott and Welana Toki scored 10 points each as every Falcons player scored in the contest, which improved Solano's record to 2-2 overall. Kate Shipp added six points, 12 rebounds, five assists and four steals for Solano. The Falcons jumped out to a quick lead with their stifling defensive pressure. They never relinquished the lead and held on to a 36-16 lead at the half.

Reedley too much for Solano
ROCKVILLE - Welana Toki scored 12 points and Arielle Salvador added 11 but the Solano Community College women's basketball team struggled against a much bigger Reedley team in a 71-48 loss to the Tigers Nov. 30. Reedley, which advanced to the state final four last year, went up 14-5 after back-and-forth scoring in the opening minutes but extended to a 40-20 lead by halftime. The Tigers' lead grew to 25 points in the second half before Solano put its full-court pressure defense on and cut the lead to 16 late in the game. But Reedley didn't go away and held on for the victory. Solano (2-3) travels to the College of Sequoias tournament Dec. 2-5. The Falcons open with Ventura College Thursday at 3:30 p.m.

Too many turnovers doom Solano women VISALIA — Alitrinette Scott had 17 points, eight rebounds and three steals but the Solano Community College women's basketball team lost to Ventura 57-44 in the first round of the Tom Gilcrest Invitational at College of Sequoias Dec. 2. The Falcons had 32 turnovers and struggled to run their offensive sets, according to Solano coach Matt Borchert. "Both teams were really similar height-wise and experience-wise," he said. "The effort was high by both teams, but they got 18 offensive rebounds in the first half and that allowed them to get up on us." Arielle Salvador added nine points and three assists while Kate Shipp led the team with 10 rebounds. Solano fell to 2-4 and takes on either Sacramento City College or Cerritos College Dec. 3 at noon.

VISALIA — Marian Murphy led four Solano Community College women's basketball players in double figures with 17 points as the Falcons stayed alive in the Tom Gilcrest Invitational at College of Sequoias Dec. 3 by beating Sacramento City College 62-61. Murphy knocked down five 3-pointers and teammates Arielle Salvador (14 points), Alitrinette Scott (13 points) and Welana Toki (10 points) all contributed heavily in the win. Solano takes on LA Valley in the consolation semifinals Dec. 4 at noon.

Solano Women drop thrilling contest at COS
VISALIA — In what coach Matt Borchert called "the best game of the tournament," the Solano Community College women's basketball team lost a heartbreaking 77-75 double overtime decision to L.A. Valley Dec. 4 in the consolation semifinals of the Tom Gilcrest Invitational at College of Sequoias. Borchert said the crowd in attendance was cheering the entire game as Solano went on a 12-2 run in the final 49 seconds of the first overtime to force the extra period. But defensive breakdowns and turnovers at crucial times on offense sent the Falcons out of the tournament. Welana Toki led the way for Solano (3-5) with 23 points and 11 rebounds while Alitrinette Scott scored 15 points and added six rebounds, Marian Murphy had 11 points and five rebounds and Arielle Salvador added 10 points. With 49 seconds left in overtime the Falcons were down 63-53. Solano hit two free throws with 39 seconds left and Murphy was fouled on the box out sending her to the line with 39 seconds still remaining. She hit one attempt to make the score 63-57 and the Falcons fouled immediately. L.A. Valley made two free throws with 37 seconds on the clock and Murphy was fouled again on Solano's next possession. She hit both free throws to make the score 65-59. Murphy was fouled again on the box out and hit another pair of free throws to cut Solano's deficit to four, 65-61, with 32 ticks left. L.A. Valley missed its free throws and Toki made one free throw the next time down to make the score 65-62 with 18 seconds left. L.A. Valley came up empty on its next possession and Angelica Negron nailed a 24-foot 3-pointer with 10 seconds left to tie the game at 65-65 and send the crowd into a frenzy. "Everybody was yelling," Borchert said. "It was awesome." In the double overtime, Murphy's attempt at a game-winning 3-pointer graced the front of the rim as the buzzer sounded. Solano now prepares for its own Solano Showdown which opens Dec. 10. The Falcons open with DeAnza College at 8 p.m.

Solano opens Showdown with victory
ROCKVILLE — The Solano Community College women's basketball team opened the Tenth Annual Solano Showdown with a 78-38 win over De Anza College Dec. 11.
Welana Toki scored 22 points to lead the Falcons, who advance to play Porterville in the winner's bracket semifinals. Every Solano player who entered the game, scored as Arielle Salvador added 12 points. Kate Shipp and Candice Bersola each scored six points, but cleaned up on the boards with 15 and 12, respectively.

Welana Toki led the Falcons with 19 points while Kia Shaw added 10. The Falcons fell behind 38-22 at the half and the Rams extended to a 28-point advantage early before Solano was forced to play catchup.

Falcons suffer heartbreaking defeat
LOS ALTOS HILLS — Solano Community College earned a moral victory Dec. 27, falling 70-61 to Foothill at the Mike Gervasoni Memorial Classic. Foothill entered the game ranked No. 5 in California by the Commission on Athletics, but couldn't put the Falcons away until the final minute of play. Solano trailed by as many as 20 points in the first half and by 10 at halftime before cutting the deficit to four with 56 seconds remaining in the game after Angelica Negron hit a 3-pointer. However, the Falcons turned the ball over and were forced to foul to account for the final margin. Stephanie Steffens led the Falcons with a career-high 15 points and six rebounds. Arielle Salvador added 14 points. Kia Shaw finished with 11 points and five steals.

LOS ALTOS HILLS — The Solano Community College women's basketball team dropped a 78-67 decision to College of Sequoias Dec. 28 in the second round of the Mike Gervasoni Memorial Classic. Solano women open BVC with dominant performance
PITTSBURG — Solano Community College opened Bay Valley Conference
play with a record-setting 96-17 victory over Los Medanos Jan. 4 in
women's junior college basketball. The Falcons set school records
for fewest points allowed (17) and most steals in a game (34). All
ten players scored for Solano, which ended a five-game losing
streak, with Stephanie Steffens and Welana Toki each scoring 15
points to lead the way. Kate Shipp added 13 for the Falcons. Solano

ROCKVILLE – The Solano Community
College women's
basketball team dropped a heartbreaking 62-50 decision to conference
rival Contra Costa Jan. 7. The Falcons dropped to 5-11 overall and
1-1 in the Bay Valley Conference. Solano kept the game close in the
first half, going on a 10-0 run to tie the game 19-19, but the
Comets finished off the half with an 8-1 run to take a 27-20 lead
into the locker room. Contra Costa cruised in the second half as the
Falcons ran into foul trouble down the stretch and couldn't convert
several easy baskets. Stephanie Steffens continued to have the hot
hand for Solano, tallying 13 points while Marian Murphy added 13 of
her own on three 3-pointers. Solano will try to get back on the
winning track Jan. 11 when it hosts Mendocino College at 6 p.m.

Falcons turn up the defense in victory
ROCKVILLE — The Solano Community College women's
basketball team overcame sloppy play, but made up for
it with great defense in the second half in beating
Mendocino College 50-36 Jan. 11 in Bay Valley
Conference play.
The Falcons improved to 6-11 overall and 2-1 in the
BVC.
Arielle Salvador led all scorers with 15 points while
Welana Toki added 12.
Solano made a late first-half run to take a 27-14 lead
and forced turnovers in the second half to eventually
expand its lead to 20 points.
The Falcons also allowed just one shot by the Eagles
on offense and kept Mendocino's best player, Jody
Steliga, way below her season average in points.
Solano hits the road Friday to take on Merritt College
in Oakland at 7 p.m.

Solano records important BVC win
ROCKVILLE — The Solano Community College women's
basketball team picked up a thrilling victory over
Diablo Valley College Jan. 18, beating the Vikings
73-56.
Welana Toki scored a career-high 27 points and added
seven rebounds to lead the Falcons, who improved to
8-11 overall and 4-1 in the Bay Valley Conference.
Earlier in the evening, Santa Rosa beat Contra Costa
70-50, putting Solano in a tie for second place with
the Comets.
The Falcons took control of the game with a 17-1 run
in the second half that gave them a 57-41 lead that
the Vikings cut to seven with about 4:30 left but
never fully recovered from.
Marian Murphy scored 17 points and had four rebounds
and four steals while Kate Shipp led the Falcons with
11 rebounds.
Solano takes a break from the BVC schedule and travels
to Santa Clara Jan. 21 to take on Mission College at 7

Solano women win fourth straight
SANTA CLARA — Welana Toki scored 25 points and grabbed
eight rebounds to lead the Solano Community College
women's basketball team to a 62-47 non-conference win
over Mission College Jan. 21.
The Falcons, winners of four straight, lost to Mission
on Dec. 12 77-62 in the third place game of the Solano Showdown.
Toki has scored 20 or more points in three straight
games for Solano.
"We controlled the game from the get go," said Solano
coach Matt Borchert. "We played for 40 minutes and
dismantled them. We played full-court man defense and
I think they thought we would be in zone like the
first time we played."
Borchert added that things are clicking defensively
for his team right now. It couldn't come at a better
time as the Falcons travel to take on Santa Rosa
Junior College, which is ranked No. 1 in the North, in
a crucial Bay Valley Conference game Tuesday.
"The light bulb is starting to come on all the way for
us," Borchert said.
Arielle Salvador added 10 points, eight rebounds and
three steals for the Falcons, who got three points,
six rebounds and six assists from Kia Shaw.

Solano women topple Contra Costa in OT
SAN PABLO — Sometimes 40 minutes just isn't enough.
Solano Community College missed an opportunity to end
things in regulation before defeating Contra Costa
87-80 in overtime in Bay Valley Conference women's
basketball Feb 1.
With the win, the Falcons took over sole possession of
second place in the BVC at 6-2 and 11-12 overall.
"That was a huge win for us," said Solano coach Matt
Borchert. "I'm happy for our girls. They deserved to
win a game like this."
Solano erased a six point halftime deficit and
controlled the game late before Contra Costa's
Marqueta Green hit a game-tying three with 11.4
seconds left in regulation.
After a timeout, the Falcons pushed the ball downcourt
and found Welana Toki inside. Toki maneuvered around a
defender but saw her shot roll of the rim as the
buzzer sounded.
Despite the heartbreaking end to regulation, Solano
scored the first six points of overtime and Toki
sealed the game, making five-of-six free throws.
Toki led the Falcons with 29 points with Kia Shaw
adding 15, Alitrinette Scott 13, and Arielle Salvador
10. Green led Contra Costa with 36 points.

Merritt puts a scare into Solano
ROCKVILLE - The Solano women's basketball team nearly
lost a 23-point lead but held on to beat Merritt
College 66-58 Feb. 8.
Welana Toki scored 15 of her game-high 24 points in
the second half as the Falcons opened up a 41-23 lead
at halftime. Solano opened the second half with a 9-4
run to lead 50-27, but Merritt staged a furious
comeback, pulling within six, with less than five
minutes to go.
Solid free throw shooting in the closing minutes and
calm play by the five players on the court were the
difference for the Falcons, who improved to 12-11
overall and 8-2 in the BVC.

DVC's attempt to trim the lead even more fell short as
a 3-point attempt was rebounded by Toki with 26
seconds left. Scott hit a pair of free throws to put
the game away.
The Falcons (14-12, 9-2) close out the regular season
on Feb. 18 in a home game against first place Santa
Rosa. The game will be the final home game for
sophomores Stephanie Steffens and Lola Vaka.

Solano women fight hard in defeat
ROCKVILLE — The Solano Community College women's
basketball team earned a moral victory Feb. 18 in a
70-63 loss to Bay Valley Conference champion Santa
Rosa in the regular season finale for both teams.
The Falcons played tough in the first half, with seven
lead changes occurring, and only trailed the Bear Cubs
six, 41-35.
The game remained tight through the second half but
Santa Rosa went on a 12-0 run to take a 56-40 lead.
Solano cut the lead to six, 59-53, but never got
closer.
The Falcons (14-13, 9-3) will head into the postseason
with a probable road game Feb. 25 or Feb 26.
