Program Description
Practical and theoretical knowledge in basic maintenance techniques,
plus the special requirements of either airframe or powerplant work.
Upon satisfactory completion of the required courses, the student is
eligible to take the Federal Aviation Administration written, oral and
practical examination for airframe or powerplant license.
Opportunities
An ever-increasing number of new light and
medium aircraft are in the sky, and a number of new airports are being
built by government agencies throughout the country. There is a pressing
demand for qualified aircraft mechanics. Positions can be found with
metropolitan area and rural airports, and with government agencies
throughout the country and with private firms and contractors. Mechanics
should be able to adapt easily to new developments in their field.
Preparation in high school should include courses in algebra, geometry and
shop. Working conditions are clean, well lighted and attractive.
To achieve the:
Associate in Science Degree -
Completion of the units required for
the major in either Airframe, Powerplant, or Airframe and Powerplant and
general education requirements.
Certificate of Achievement -
Upon completion of the 41-unit major listed below with a grade of C (2.0) or better. This will allow you
to take the Federal Aviation Administration's written and practical exams
which are administered at Solano College.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
requires 1900 hours (four full semesters and one four-week summer session)
of instruction to complete the combination airframe and powerplant
curriculum.
Practical and theoretical knowledge in
basic maintenance techniques, plus the special requirements of either
airframe or powerplant work. Upon satisfactory completion of the required
courses, the student is eligible to take the Federal Aviation
Administration written, oral and practical examination for airframe or
powerplant license.
These vocational courses are designed for
two-year programs and may be transferable to Bachelor of Vocational
Education or other four-year programs. See the Solano College Catalog for
details on each course. It is important to see a counselor regarding the
catalog of record.
Aeronautics courses numbered 200 and above are intended
as refresher courses and may be used to prepare for FAA licensing. They
are not applicable toward the certificate or A.S. Degree in Airframe
Maintenance or Powerplant Maintenance and are not covered under Part 147
FAR's or the school FAA certification. Students with prior experience or
schooling must have Solano instructor verification for substitution or wavering. "Proof of Proficiency Exam" may be required prior to
enrollment in any class other than 55.
