Early Childhood Education

Program Description

This program prepares students to meet the new and stringent demands of today's child care centers, preschool programs, and nursery schools.  It offers a comprehensive study of the development of the young child as well as opportunities to learn techniques to enhance the emotional, physical, social, and cognitive needs of the child.

Additional Program Information

You can be trained for a satisfying, meaningful job as an early childhood teacher at Solano Community College.  You may choose either a one-year program leading to the Certificate of Achievement or the well-rounded 60-unit course leading to the Associate in Science Degree.  Classes are offered in the evening as well as in the daytime, to accommodate those who are employed in existing programs.

Your training will qualify you for a unique role in education, working with young children during the years when they form their basic attitudes about themselves and the people around them.  Authorities have recognized the importance of guidance in early childhood experience and thus more emphasis has been placed recently on educational programs for the preschool child.  New nursery schools, preschools and child care centers are being established each year by private business and public agencies.

The Solano College Children's Programs are an important and integral part of your Early Childhood Education program.  Here, in a safe and stimulating environment, the children develop trust in adults outside of their immediate family.  They enjoy the opportunity to be creative, to share group experience and to become self-sufficient.  They learn to take turns and to respect the rights of others.  They develop language skills and an understanding of the world around them.

Opportunities

There is a rapidly increasing demand for trained, qualified early childhood teachers and assistants.  Openings exist on private and public early childhood education teaching staffs for full-time and part-time employment.  Teachers are being sought by private nursery schools, children’s centers, compensatory preschool programs, church-sponsored preschool programs, parent-participation nursery schools, recreational facilities and by hospital and therapy centers. An especially urgent need exists for teachers holding the Children's Center permit which authorizes the permit holder to serve as the lead teacher in state and/or federally funded programs.

Your New Skills

You will learn the skills necessary to understand children and to help them adjust to their world and to themselves.  You will explore and develop techniques of guiding preschool children in their social, emotional, physical, and intellectual growth.
