Program Description
This major is an interdisciplinary program which
provides an opportunity for students to pursue organized studies of
minority groups in American Society and to foster and expand general
understanding of these groups. The courses allow for a wide latitude
of study to meet a variety of interests with courses which fulfill
competence in and an understanding of the unique contributions of American
ethnic groups; interpretation of American ethnic culture as manifested in
its history, its literature, and its social, economic, political, and
philosophical development. (The course descriptions may be found
under the appropriate disciplines.)
The Program
The Ethnic Studies program was established at Solano
Community College in 1969. Its purpose is to increase knowledge,
understanding and appreciation of the culture, history and experience of
different ethnic minority groups in our society. The program’s
interdisciplinary approach is designed to foster a sensitivity for the
similarities and differences that bind us all in the human family.
Courses are drawn from various campus departments
including anthropology, art, history, languages, literature, philosophy,
psychology and the social sciences. This broad background presents a
rich mix of ideas to promote pride and self-knowledge as well as respect
and understanding.
Academically, courses offered in the Ethnic Studies
program meet the general education requirements, certain academic majors
and career objectives, and many satisfy in-service needs of area employers
for diversity training.
