Program Description
This program is designed to equip students with the
basic knowledge and skills necessary for the variety of jobs in the field
of Human Services. These courses are intended to provide entry-level
skills and training for students who are interested in employment in
mental health, social welfare, developmental services, corrections,
alcohol and drug treatment, or child/adolescent treatment services.
Additional Program
Information
Solano College's new Human Services major is
designed for students who plan to work as paraprofessionals with such
agencies as welfare, rehabilitation, mental health, schools, probation and
corrections, as well as for possible transfer to four-year programs in
related majors. The program will equip students with the necessary
skills and experience to work with clients in a variety of social service
settings. Courses range from an overview of Human Services delivery
systems, learning about culturally diverse populations, methods of working
with individuals and groups, case management techniques to field
experience in one or more county agencies.
.Opportunities
In developing the new program, Solano College found that
an estimated 160 field work positions were available locally, and an
average of 50 student interns would be needed annually by the agencies
surveyed. These human service workers would assist social workers
and caseworkers in developing, organizing, and conducting programs to
address issues such as substance abuse, elder care, and other areas of
human interest. They can provide services to families and clients
where the nature of the problem, or relationships involved, is less
complex or serious, by helping them obtain information on the use of
social and community agencies and services.
