Professional Photography

Program Description

Pre-employment training in professional photography is designed to prepare students for self-employment and employment in the private and public sectors and covers a broad spectrum of photographic field, e.g., advertising illustration, industrial, portraiture, medical, commercial, photojournalism, and landscape.

Additional Program Information

Candidates for training in photography should have patience, imagination, artistic taste and an "eye for a picture."  They should also have a capacity to spend long periods of time working in the darkroom.  Please check the Solano College catalog for prerequisites.

Opportunities

Photography has become an important instrument of our culture: in commerce, industry, science, entertainment, journalism, public relations, law enforcement, advertising and many others.  It is the universal language of human understanding.  Although the number of jobs available usually reflects the economic conditions, there is always a demand for highly creative, skilled professionals who have a wide range of experiences in their trade and know the applications for all types of situations.  Unlike many trades and professionals, the area of self-employment is open, expanding, and easily accessible.

Concept

Upon completion of the fundamentals of black and white photography you will explore the techniques of "seeing photographically" and the importance of composition, form, color and presentation.  As you further your studies through advanced techniques and concepts you will be urged to perfect these skills to their highest degree.  We are constantly expanding and revamping the program to meet the demands of industry and the profession for the benefit of the students.  Through creative and practical application of projects and assignments we stress "knowing how to" rather than "knowing about."  We feel our approach to curriculum is one of flexibility and change and invite full participation by those who select this department as a place to grow.

Camera equipment for photography classes is not provided by the College.  Students registering for these courses must have available a 35 mm camera or equivalent.  Material costs are approximately $100 per course.
