Program Description
A study of the principles of water and wastewater
disposal and purification including municipal and industrial wastewater
collection and treatment. The program will satisfy most of the
requirements for certification of water and wastewater treatment
personnel.
Opportunities
Modern water and wastewater treatment
plants require new technical skills. The Solano County treatment
plants are constantly upgrading their capabilities and young men and women
entering this field must receive skilled training. Currently
employed technicians require constant upgrading of their skills.
Both groups of employees must become State certified to become, or to
remain employed. The field of water and wastewater treatment is ever
changing and the demands for qualified personnel will be continuing as
this field continues to change and expand.
Your New Skills
Upon completion of an introductory course studying
disease transmission, waste treatment collection and disposal methods,
pool sanitation and hygiene, you will explore the laboratory procedures
for identifying organisms peculiar to water and wastewater
treatment. You will learn the techniques of water purification
including color, alkalinity, hardness, detergents, chlorides and fluorides
by testing in a laboratory situation. As the program progresses,
your knowledge of laboratory testing to evaluate wastewater treatment
methods and procedures will be greatly enhanced. The latter stages
of the program will familiarize you with the engineering aspects and
maintenance of treatment plants including the study of hydraulic,
pneumatic, mechanical and electrical control systems and components.
You will be made aware of the design and operation of treatment plants as
well as the methods of process calculations for design, control and
maintenance of plants.
