Welding Technician

Program Description

Designed to prepare the graduate for employment as a welder or a welder helper in the metal trades.  The major types of welding covered are shielded arc, acetylene gas welding, metal inert gas, tungsten inert gas, automatic and semi-automatic welding machines.

Opportunities

Chances for employment as a stick, M1G or T1G welder in the San Francisco Bay Area are excellent once certified.  Certifications in the above welding processes are possible for all welding students.

To achieve the:

Associate in Science Degree - Completion of a total of 69 units, including the 48-unit major, general education requirements, and electives.

Certificate of Achievement - Completion of the 48-unit major listed below.

Certification of students as "Code Welders" is available for a nominal cost to the student.

WELD 100 - Welding Technology  10 Units
WELD 101 - Welding Technology  10 Units
WELD 102 - Welding Technology 10 Units
WELD 103 - Welding Technology  10 Units
DRAFT 79 - Blueprint Reading 2 Units
IT 140 - Industrial Materials  3 Units
IT 150 - Industrial Processes 3 Units

Total of 48 Units

Job Direct Certificate:  Welding Equipment Operator
Completion of the nine units listed below.

All courses must be completed with a grade of "C" or better.

WELD 174 - Weld Equip Operation 2 Units
WELD 175 - Welding Fabrication  2 Units
WELD 176 - Shielded Arc Certification 2 Units
WELD 177 - Wire Welding Certification  2 Units
*OCCED 90 - Occupational Work Exp 1 Unit

Total of 9 Units

*Students will be required to complete 80 hours of cooperative supervised work experience to receive credit.

These vocational courses are designed for two-year programs and may be transferable to Bachelor of Vocational Education or other four-year programs.  See the Solano College Catalog for details on each course.  It is important that students see a counselor regarding the appropriate catalog of record.
