Registered Nursing

Program Description

The Registered Nursing Program at Solano Community College is a 2-year Associate Degree Program fully accredited by the State Board of Registered Nursing and is subject to its regulations regarding the education and training of nurses.  Graduates of the Program comply with the American Nurses Association code for Nursing Practice and the Nurse Practice Act of the state of California.  Successful completion of the program qualifies the student to take the California Licensing Examination (NCLEX) to become a Registered Nurse.  The practice of nursing requires knowledge of, and the ability to speak, to read, and to write the English language.  This program follows the policy of non-discrimination set forth by the Governing Board of Solano Community College.

Associate in Science Degree

The Associate in Science Degree is awarded upon successful completion of the major and general education requirements.

Program Requirements and Courses

All courses taken toward the Registered Nursing Degree must be completed with a grade of "C" or better.

Students are encouraged to attend a Registered Nursing Information Session prior to seeing a counselor individually.  these sessions provide a basic understanding of the nursing program and the requirements for application.  Students applying to the program may see any counselor; however, students transferring with numerous transcripts should make an appointment to see the Nursing Counselor.

Application Procedures

Only those students formally admitted to the nursing program may enroll in nursing courses.

Prerequisites

To be eligible to apply to the Registered Nursing Program students must have completed the following four prerequisite courses with grades of "C" or better:

ENGL 1 - College Composition (3 Units)
BIOSC 6 - Human Anatomy (5 Units)
BIOSC 5 - Introductory Physiology (5 Units)
BIOSC 14 - Principles of Microbiology (4 Units)

Complete the following courses with grades of "C" or better prior to entering the second semester of the Nursing Program:

NUTRI 10 - Nutrition (3 Units)
HU DV 70 - Lifespan Human Development (3 Units)
NURSE 52 - Pharmacology (3 Units)

We recommend that the student complete the above three courses prior to entering the program to prevent overload in the first semester.

Note: The above courses have prerequisites.  Please check the course descriptions in the catalog.

Application steps for nursing major:

1.  Complete an application to Solano Community College
2.  Attend a Registered Nursing Information Session.
3.  Obtain all required transcripts.  You must have official transcripts sent to the Office of Admissions.
4.  See counselor for an evaluation of major requirements and to receive the Nursing referral form verifying completion of prerequisites.
5.  Take referral form to the Health Occupations Division, Building 800 to receive a Nursing Application.
6.  Submit completed application and receive a wait list number.

Prior to first class meeting, students must have:

1.  Physical examination indicating physical fitness and required immunizations.
2.  Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for Health Care Providers card.
3.  Evidence of purchase of malpractice insurance for student nurses.
4.  Attend an orientation meeting with nursing faculty to be arranged by Health Occupations.

Retention in Program

1.  If a student's conduct poses potential harm to the well-being of clients, the student may be terminated from the nursing program.
2.  If a student's physical or emotional health appears to be such that he or she cannot meet the objectives of the program in nursing, the student may be asked to leave the nursing program.
3.  In order to remain in the program and to graduate, a student must maintain a grade of "C" or better in the theory and the clinical portions of the nursing program.

In accordance with state law, the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) may deny licensure to an individual for crimes substantially related to the practice of nursing.  Upon acceptance to the nursing program, any student who has had a conviction related to sex crimes, drug crimes (including DUI) and crimes of violence may need to contact the BRN regarding his/her status.

Nursing courses must be taken in sequence because one course is prerequisite to another.

NURSE 50B - Basic Human Needs 3.5 Units

*NURSE 52 - Pharmacology for Health Care Professionals I  3 Units
NURSE 54 - Maternal-Child Nursing 5 Units
NURSE 55 - Nursing of Adults I 5 Units
PSYCH 1 - Intro. to Psychology OR
SOCSC 22 - Ethnic, Racial, and Minority Group Relations in Harmony & Conflict 3 Units
*Course must be completed prior to entry into NURSE 54/55

Second Year Courses
NURSE 60 - Nursing of Adults and Children II/Medical-Surgical Nursing  5 Units
NURSE 61 - Mental Health Nursing 5 Units
NURSE 63 - Nursing of Adults III/Advanced Medical-Surgical Nursing and Community Health Nursing 6 Units
NURSE 65 - Role Transition, Management Theory and Practice 4 Units

Concurrent Course

The following course is required for graduation and may be completed any time during the two-year program.

Communications course other than ENGL 1 3 Units

Total of 53-57.5 Units

Credit for previous nursing education may be obtained through challenge examinations. Advanced standing is available for qualified applicants.
