| Ethnic Studies Past Speakers - Spring 2000
This is a photo excerpt from "A Soldiers Play," an explosive, fact-based theatrical piece which turns back the clock and sheds light on a homicide which occurred in a Louisiana Army Camp during World War II. "A Soldiers Play," which was sponsored by the Ethnic Studies program, made a successful debut at SCC's main campus theatre and received outstanding commendations from local newspapers.
Ms. Yanina Cywinska delivered a very powerful and compelling speech which outlined the horrors of the Holocaust that occurred in Nazi Germany during World War II. Cywinska was born in Warsaw, Poland to a Catholic family whose father was morally obligated to help the Jews in the Warsaw ghetto. Consequently, she was arrested and placed in Auschwitz, one of the most notorious of all the Nazi concentration camps.
Maggie Escobedo-Steele, a distinguished professional mediator dedicated to peacemaking and violence prevention, gave a powerful speech at SCC. She has developed many leadership and peacemaking programs for Native American tribes.
Rischa Slade, a Councilwoman for the City of Vacaville and the Executive Director of the Vacaville Social Services Corporation, gave an excellent presentation in the Boardroom at SCC. She has an extensive background in Public Relations, Community Development, Homeless Issues, Welfare Reform, and Child Care.
Jo Ann Yolanda Hernandez grew up in San Antonio, which is the focal point of her inspirational stories. She gave an interesting presentation on Chicano Literature at SCC. She is the author of several books and her stories have been published in various magazines and feminist journals.
Lt. Col. James C. Warren, who began his military career in 1943 as one of the original Tuskegee Airmen, delivered an excellent speech here at SCC. During his distinguished 35 years in the military, he received the Distinguished Flying Cross with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Air Medal with 11 Oak Leaf Clusters, and various other citations.
Dr. Ella Tolliver and Karen McCord
Dr. Ella Tolliver (left) and Karen McCord (right), who are Professors at Solano Community College, insightfully listed the powerful tools necessary to achieve success. Their numerous presentations at conferences and seminars have achieved a national reputation for themselves and SCC. Many of the ideas presented in this lecture will be included in their forthcoming anthology of women's challenges and achievements. |
