Last week at the Phi Rho Pi Community College National Championship Speech and Debate Tournament (April 9-17), held in Philadelphia, the Solano Speech and Debate Team captured the Gold Award in overall sweepstakes among the 49 community colleges competing in the small schools division, thus becoming the national champions. The stunning turnaround in what had been a rebuilding year for the Falcons earned the college its first-ever national championship in speech and debate in the overall sweepstakes category (previous national champions in the debate category in both 1998 and 2002). The overall sweepstakes award is given to the school that earns the most points in both debate and individual events.

Solano’s team was comprised of returning debate national champion, Emily Carroll, and 4 new members this year, Stephanie Williams, Zachary Freels, Angela Compton and Joseph Sumbi. Carroll won the national championship once again in debate, becoming the 1st two-time national champion debater for the Falcons. Carroll also took Gold in Informative Speaking. Newcomer Stephanie Williams earned a Bronze in Poetry Interpretation, Joseph Sumbi a Bronze in Oral Interpretation of Literature, and Angela Compton a Bronze in Informative Speaking.

The Falcons also earned Silver Awards in both the overall debate and individual event categories.

“We are very proud of these students. They worked hard and won numerous competitions along the way. It is very rewarding for them to become the national champions,” stated Paulette J. Perfumo, SCC Superintendent and President.

Special thanks should also go to coaches Neil Glines and Janene Whitesell, and to Fine & Applied Arts/Behavioral Sciences Division Dean Rick Ida for their coaching, guidance and support.

The team looks forward to another successful season in 2005-06 with 4 of the 5 members of the team returning.
