Theatre Educational
Program
Mission Statement
Solano College Theatre (SCT) is
dedicated to training talented students in the
art of the theatre. Our programs are founded on the principle that individual creativity is enhanced by
immersion in aligned fields of study, nurturing,
and practice of the craft via performance.
About the Company
SCT
has three major systems for training students in the theatre arts:
The Actor Training Program is a conservatory-based
program. A conservatory program means simply this: professionals
are training you, and you will follow a specially prescribed course
of study. The Non-Conservatory Acting Program
tends to follow a more traditional approach.
The Technical Program features technical and design training.
Actor Training
Program
The Actor Training Program was
created for career-bound acting students. It is designed as an
introduction to various methods and spheres of study, preparing the
student for a more detailed conservatory or university environment
upon graduation. Voice, text, scene study, singing, dance and movement
are all viewed as components of the whole. It exposes the student to
the rigors of life in the theatre and the techniques required, but it
also shares a tradition that embraces historical foundations and
future innovations. “This training program is important to our
community as it offers opportunities otherwise unavailable to local
drama students and emerging theatre artists,” comments Carla Spindt,
ATP Conservatory Director.
The Actor Training Program is a
conservatory-based program. A conservatory program means simply this:
you are being trained by professionals, and you will follow a
specially prescribed course of study. The full course of study can
result in an AA degree, although some students elect only to enroll in
conservatory sections and move on to an advanced professional
conservatory. ATP primarily functions to get students started on the
educational road towards a career in the performing arts. Perhaps the
most exciting aspect of the ATP is where the students go after
graduation. Our students have gone on to prestigious university
programs and conservatories such as: Harvard’s American Repertory
Theatre, North Carolina School for the Arts, NYU, Boston Conservatory
Theatre, Julliard, UCLA and De Paul University to name only a few.
By taking advantage of the synergy
created by combining professional and student talent together, Solano
College Theatre has become the most award-winning theatre in Northern
California.

Non-Conservatory Acting Program
This course of study follows more traditional approaches to actor
training and allows the student to
get a broad overview of the world of theatre. This
18-unit major, when combined with completion of the SCC general education requirements, results in an
Associate of Arts degree. These courses
are offered primarily in the morning hours.

Technical
Theatre Program
The Technical Theatre Program is
designed to provide a foundation for those interested in pursuing a
career in the Design and Technical aspects of the entertainment
industry, as well as those interested in getting involved in their
local community and helping to create a live theatre experience.
Solano College Theatre’s Technical
Program includes courses in stage lighting, stagecraft and carpentry,
makeup and costume history and construction. Our course of study in
technical theatre allows the student to develop a large overview of
technical theatre.
Completion of this track, when
combined with successful completion of SCC’s general education
requirements, can result in an AA. Particular emphasis is placed on
stagecraft, lighting, costume construction and introduction to design.
Students have a unique opportunity to be educated in a variety of
technical areas via Solano College Theatre productions.
All productions are entirely staffed
by student technicians, run crews, lighting crews, riggers, stage
managers, sound operators, costume assistants, etc. As well, many
assistant designer position opportunities are available throughout the
production season.
Award-winning professional designers
create great challenges before Solano College Theatre technical
students, who work closely with Solano College Theatre’s professional
staff to meet those challenges.
Whether you are interested in a
career devoted to theatre technology or the creativity of a designer,
or you simply want to come and help build or run a show, SCT is a
great place to start.
