A Letter from Our Artistic Director

Dear Patron,

I've been thinking a lot about my mom lately, and the remarkable things she did for me when I was a kid; things which then and now changed the course of my life.  I was twelve, and was a voracious reader.  From the Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, and Tom Swift, Mom plied me with the Readers Digest Condensed Editions, and I met Arthur Hailey, Victoria Holt, and Daphne DeMaurier.  At the same time, Mom took me to the theater, where a door opened for me; a door which has remained open until this day.  I still get chills hearing the opening strings of South Pacific's Bali Hai, which was the first musical I ever saw.  Emile DeBeque's children from a native woman (very taboo in my Catholic school) the death of Lt. Cable, and the transformation of Nellie Forbush.  I immediately ran out and bought James Michner's Tales of the South Pacific to compare the musical with the book on which it was based.  Stage and book, they became one, and my mom had opened the door to not only art, but what would become my entire life.

We at Solano College Theatre see our mission as transformance.  Not only the audience who has grown up as I had done, on this amazing concept of page and stage, but mostly for the young who have never seen it, usually never read it, and are ripe for change.  The beginning of every acting class I tell the students, "Vocabulary is power.  Learn it; use it; own it!  All of us are made up of 75% water, 25% matter, and a story.  It is the 'story' which makes us unique!"

We welcome all of you to open up to the stories we will present, hopefully finding therein a reflection of your own life, joy and uniqueness.

Thanks, Mom, from the heart!

George Maguire
