OCLC (Online Computer Library Center)

Through SCC Library's membership in OCLC, patrons can access over 6,700 different library collections throughout the country. OCLC can only be accessed by paper request to the SCC Interlibrary Loan Service. This part of the ILL Service is only available to students, faculty and staff of SCC.

How do I request an Interlibrary Loan (ILL)?

Before placing a request for ILL materials, please make sure the materials you are interested in are not available through SNAP or SuperSearch. The Interlibrary Loan Service is only to be used after these resources have been exhausted.

Interlibrary Loan request forms can be found at the SCC Library reference desk. When you have completed the form please leave it at the reference desk to be processed.

What kinds of materials can I request?

Books

Journal/Magazine/Newspaper Articles
It is important to specify where the article citation (title, author, volume, etc.) was obtained. If the citation comes from an SCC database, please print a copy of the citation and attach it to the Article Request Form.

Audio/visual materials are easily damaged and many libraries will not loan them.

Is there a charge to use the ILL Service?

The majority of materials requested through Interlibrary Loan can be obtained for free. All Interlibrary Loan requests to OCLC are processed for free and as long as materials can be obtained from libraries that lend at no charge, the Interlibrary Loan transaction will cost nothing to the patron.

Occasionally, a request can only be filled through a library that charges to lend. Charges can vary from $3.00 to $25.00. These charges will not be paid by the library and will be passed onto the patron. It is important that you specify whether or not you are willing to pay any extra fees for obtaining interlibrary loan materials. The Interlibrary Loan Service will not agree to pay for any borrowed materials without your prior permission. The Interlibrary Loan Request Form allows you to indicate the maximum amount you are willing to pay for an item.

Note: Placing Interlibrary Loan requests with OCLC can be time consuming for both borrowing and lending libraries. The SCC librarians are committed to providing OCLC Interlibrary Loans for free as long as the service is used appropriately, which means only ordering materials from OCLC that are necessary for your research and picking up those materials when they arrive.

What if I don't pick up my ILL materials?

A $3.00 fine, which covers the average cost of an OCLC Interlibrary Loan request, will be added to your library account when you do not pick up materials ordered for you through the SCC Interlibrary Loan service.

How long will it take for my ILL to arrive?

Requests can take a few days to several weeks to be filled. The availability of the material, its format, the location of the lending library, and time of year are all factors in how quickly an item will be received.

Where do I pick up my ILL items?

All Interlibrary Loan materials can be picked up at the circulation desk. If the item you are to pick up was requested through the SCC Interlibrary Loan Service, please specify this to circulation staff.
[top]

How long can I keep ILL items?

Due dates on materials from OCLC can vary widely. On average, items may be borrowed for three weeks. The due date will be supplied upon checking out the item. Patrons are responsible for returning books safely and on time. Lending libraries may impose special conditions of use, such as library use only, non-renewable, etc. When you accept this loan you are obliged to honor these conditions. Failure to return Interlibrary Loan items on time will result in a fine and/or the loss of Interlibrary Loan privileges.

Are there charges for overdue ILL materials?

Unless otherwise specified, late charges for all overdue Interlibrary Loan materials are $0.20 a day.
[top]

Where do I return ILL materials?

OCLC materials must be returned to the SCC Interlibrary Loan Service via the SCC Circulation desk. Please specify to the circulation staff that the item(s) you are returning are OCLC materials. Photocopies of articles do not need to be returned unless specified.
