Solano College Awards Contract for Swing Space Project

Solano Community College board members voted at their January 19th board meeting to award a $1.8M contract to Winters-based JDS Builders Group Inc. to convert space in the 1800B building to eight new classrooms. This "swing space" will be used for business and science students when renovations begin on science and business buildings next summer as part of the $124.5M Measure G projects, which cover a range of renovations and new facilities in Vallejo and Vacaville.

The Governing Board also reviewed architectural drawings by LPA Architects for the new student services center, which replace the existing center on the Fairfield campus. The new facility will be 36,618 gross sq. ft. with 28,370 assigned sq. ft. and will offer a wide array of services for students.

"The committee which helped to design the student services center wanted to create a one stop center to service the needs of our diverse student body. Our committee included students, faculty and administrators and took into account that we have students from high school through octogenarians," stated Gerry Fisher, VP of Student Services and chair of the committee.

Measure G is infusing $124.5 million into the Solano Community College system through 2009 for new college facilities plus upgrades to the existing campus infrastructure. The new Vallejo and Vacaville facilities will be approximately 47,000 square feet each with modern classrooms and computer labs to meet the educational needs of the expanding Solano County population.

The main campus of Solano College in Fairfield will have a new student learning center, and an extensively remodeled resources building which will house the library and classrooms, and upgrade the campus infrastructure with repairs to electrical transformers, plumbing, and the aging air conditioning and heating systems.
