![]() News 04/08/09 - Dr. Laguerre appointed new SCC Superintendent/President
FAIRFIELD, CA – Following a nation-wide search by a fourteen-member selection committee, and public forums for the three final candidates, the Solano Community College District (SCCD) Governing Board appointed Dr. Jowel Laguerre as the new permanent superintendent/president during a special meeting held Wednesday evening, April 8, 2009. Dr. Laguerre will assume his responsibilities beginning on July 1, 2009.“The elected trustees of Solano Community College District were impressed with Dr. Jowel Laguerre’s extensive educational experiences and with his interview on April 1st for the position of Superintendent/President of SCCD,” explains Governing Board President A. Marie Young. “Dr. Laguerre is accustomed to dealing with pressure and creating specific solutions for various problems at education institutions. His extensive accreditation experience will make him a valuable addition to SCCD as we focus on removing the district off of accreditation sanctions, while implementing our vision/mission statements and core values. I am anxiously looking forward to working with Dr. Laguerre, who is a ‘seasoned’ administrator, and I am confident that he will be an incredible asset to SCCD.” Dr. Jowel Laguerre is currently the Vice President for Academic Affairs at Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) in Nevada, which has an enrollment of over 13,000 credit students annually. During his tenure there, he has collaborated with the faculty and staff to develop, implement, evaluate and enhance planning, budgeting, community relations, diversity and accountability. He has strengthened the processes and policies for assessment of student learning and the review of programs and curricula. He has provided leadership for the college’s comprehensive accreditation self-study and reports to the accreditation agency, has served as the institutional liaison for the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, and has served as an accreditation evaluator. Dr. Laguerre previously served as Executive Vice President for Academic and Student Services at Montgomery College (Maryland). He held academic and student services positions at Lake Superior College (Minnesota): Vice President of Student Services and Learning Support, as well as Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Since 1978, Dr. Laguerre has taught English as a second language, French, Haitian, physics and mathematics. He has published, in cooperation with Bryant C. Freeman, a Haitian-English dictionary and co-authored a Haitian textbook. He founded Teachers of Tomorrow to recruit young people into the teaching profession. He has been recognized by the Nevada Association of Career and Technical Educators for his service to education; by the Montgomery County African-American Chamber of Commerce as educator of the year, and is a U.S. Department of Education Christa McAuliffe Fellow. Dr. Laguerre serves on the Boards of the National Council for Instructional Administrators (NCIA), Western Regional Council on Black American Affairs (AACC affiliate), Reno-Sparks Chamber of Commerce, the United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierras, Saint Mary’s Medical Center, the Nevada Hispanic Services, and the Reno Sunrise Rotary Club. Dr. Laguerre holds a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership (Higher Education), a M.S. Ed. in School Administration and a M.A. in French Literature from the University of Kansas.
