Matt Borchert, Head Coach

Matt Borchert enters his 20th year coaching community college women's basketball and his eighth at Solano. Since arriving in the spring of 2000, Borchert hasn't had a losing season and has successfully moved on 20 players to four-year schools on athletic scholarships.

Besides posting a 134-89 record in seven seasons, Borchert has produced 14 all-Bay Valley Conference selections, one Bay Valley Conference MVP, one first team all-state choice, a second team all-state player and three honorable mention Kodak All-Americans. Many of Borchert's former players are seen in the record books and many more have left an impression on the program as well as on the Solano community.

In August of 2005, the Solano athletic department proudly announced that the 2004-05 team was named as one of the top 15 teams in the nation academically by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. The team was third among junior and community colleges with a 3.312 GPA. Borchert will coach his 250th game at Solano this season and currently has more than150 wins as a head coach.

The coaching staff is looking forward to another strong season with a solid sophomore class looking to post a BVC champions banner in the gym. A fantastic freshman class is also looking to make an immediate impact.

Borchert's first seven years
Borchert saw one of his toughest teams take the court in 2006-07. The Falcons were the defending BVC champions and with very few experienced players returning from that team, it was unsure how the season would go.

The team persevered though and made quite an impression right away. Solano played with intensity throughout the season and was a fun team to watch right up until the very end.

The 2005-06 season was one to remember. Besides winning his first Bay Valley Conference title, Borchert earned his 100th victory at Solano and was named Bay Valley Conference and Region 8 Coach of the Year. He posted the best winning percentage of his career and tied for most victories. It was also the fifth time a Borchert-led team qualified for the postseason.

Seven freshmen made quite an impact on the program in 2004-05.

The team struggled early on with a tough preseason schedule; it rallied starting in January with Bay Valley Conference opponents. Borchert led the team to four of five wins at one point, knocked off rival Contra Costa College in overtime on the road and finished strong to secure a second place finish in conference and advance to the playoffs.

Though the Falcons faced much adversity in 2003-04 season, four sophomores earned scholarships at the conclusion of the season and the freshmen left an impression for a bright future.

Borchert and the women's basketball program reached several milestones in 2002-03. With a win over Mendocino in the final game of the regular season, Borchert earned his 100th career win. In addition, it was the team's 20th win of the season, giving the program 10 straight years of 20-win seasons.

One week later, the Falcons opened the playoffs for the 11th straight year. There was no shortage of thrilling games that season including the team's win over College of Marin in Kentfield, the No. 2 ranked team in Northern California at the time, on a last-second shot.

Borchert's first full recruiting class took the court in 2001-02 and didn't disappoint. The team finished fourth place in the Chaffey and College of Sequoias tournaments and then went on to win eight of its next 11 games. The Falcons finished tied for second place in the BVC and Borchert earned his first career playoff victory as a head coach.

The Matt Borchert era kicked off in 2000 and right away he carried on the winning tradition, leading the team to the Chaffey Tip-Off Tournament title. While there, the Falcons knocked off the No. 1 team in the state, Mt. San Antonio College, and earned the program's first No. 1 state ranking.

The team went on to win the Solano Showdown later in the year, in another thrilling finish and advanced to the championship game of the DeAnza Classic in December.

Borchert's beginnings
Borchert got his start at Hartnell College where he was an assistant coach for the women's team in 1988-89. He was promoted to interim head coach in 1991, making him the youngest head coach in California at the time, at the age of 23.

Borchert then became an assistant coach to Mike Gervasoni in 1992 at DeAnza College in Cupertino. The team won three Coast Conference titles but more importantly, Borchert developed a relationship with one of the Bay Area's best athletes in Gervasoni, one of his closest friends and mentor. Gervasoni died in a car accident in 2004 and he is dearly missed. Ready to become a head coach again, Borchert moved on and resurrected the program at Gavilan College in Gilroy in 1995. In just his second season there, he took the team to its first playoff game and set the record for wins in a season.

In his six years in Solano County, Borchert has developed several young athletes through his highly successful basketball camps and clinics. He is a member of the WBCA and attends the women's Final Four every year developing relationships with four-year coaches and learning the ins and outs of the ever-changing women's game.

On campus at Solano, Borchert is an SCC Hall of Fame committee member, Bay Valley Conference Executive Board Member and the CCCWBCA president.

Borchert is the middle of three children; his sisters are Bonnie and Debbie. Borchert and his wife, Angela, live in Vacaville with their daughter, Diana, who was born June 23, 2005.
