Student Services FAQ
- Veterans Affairs

How do I get my benefits started?

Students may go to the Office of Veterans Affairs, Room 101, Building 100, to fill out and return the appropriate paperwork.

How long will it be before I receive my money?

Once the paperwork leaves the Office of Veterans Affairs, processing time takes 6 to 8 weeks before payment arrives.

Does the Veterans Affairs Office pay for my books?

If you are under Chapter 31 (Voc. Rehab.), your books are paid for; otherwise, no.

Why do I have to see the Veterans Counselor?

The V.A. requires that each student receiving Veterans benefits have an educational plan on file with the Office of Veterans Affairs before he/she can be certified for a third semester at Solano Community College.

If I am a Veteran, do I have to take P.E. classes?

Solano Community College does not waive physical education courses toward a degree just because you were in the military. However, if you were in the Air Force and have transcripts from the Community College of the Air Force that show physical education units, these will count towards your P.E. requirement.

Can I get assistance with my tuition?

If a student does not have sufficient funds to enroll in school, the V.A. office can defer enrollment fees to give the Veteran time to receive their V.A. money. (This is only done on an as-needed basis.)

My parent was in the military.  Can I use their G.I. Bill?

No. The only time a dependent can receive benefits from the V.A. is when the parent is 100% disabled, service connected. Spouses can also use the dependent benefits (Chapter 35.)

Can I take a double major?

No. The V.A. will only pay for pursuing one major at a time. You may, however, change your major at the Office of Veterans Affairs.

Do I have to declare my G.I. Bill on my taxes?

No. The money you receive is non-taxable.
