Step
7d - Follow-up:
Transfer to a 4-year College or University
Why
would I attend a community college before going to a California 4-year
college or university?
Admission Priority
You
have the highest admission priority at California public
universities if you transfer:
For
California Community
College courses that meet specific major requirements at an
individual California public university, see
ASSIST.
Fee
Savings
If a student enrolls for the freshman (first) and sophomore
(second) years at a four-year
California State University (CSU)
instead of a community college, the tuition fees cost about five
times as much as they do at Solano Community College.
If a student
enrolls for these first two years at a
University of California (UC),
the tuition costs ten times as much as the enrollment fees at
Solano Community College.
For example,
a course that costs $100 in fees at Solano would cost $500 at CSU
or $1000 at UC.
How can I
transfer to a 4-year college or university? When?
See general Transfer
Information on the Counseling website.
CSU and UC
application booklets, available at the Counseling Counter in
Building 100, contain detailed information. Contact us at
(707) 864-7101.
Advance
application is required nearly a year before transfer (for
example, in November for the following Fall semester).
See Admission
Priority above for the reasons to transfer as an upper division
Junior. If you choose to transfer early as a freshman or
sophomore to a CSU or UC, you must meet the
admission requirements for a first-time freshman or have made up
high school deficiencies. It is unusual, and often
impossible, to transfer as a sophomore. See a Solano
Community College counselor for more information.
Are
the course numbers the same at community colleges as at the UC and
CSU systems?
No, each
college can have a different number for the same course even
though the courses are equivalent. There has been a
common-number system for introductory lower division, transferable
courses called “California Articulation numbers (CAN), but the
website is not accessible at this time. Many college catalogs,
including ours, still list CAN numbers and may continue to be an
aid in determining equivalent courses. Please see a counselor for
further assistance.

How
can
I transfer to a California State University (CSU) from
Solano Community College?
Two out
of every three students who receive a baccalaureate degree
from the CSU began their educational program at a
California Community College.
The CSU
guarantees admission to a CSU campus to all California
Community College students who meet CSU upper-division
transfer admission requirements.
See
general information about transferring
to CSU on the Counseling website. Also, visit
the California State
University website.
Solano Community College courses numbered
1-99
transfer to CSU. You must have completed 56
transferable units to transfer as a Junior (upper division
transfer). Some
campuses will require 60 units.
The
maximum units that can be transferred for credit is 70,
although course credit can be given for additional courses
taken after 70 units. See a transfer advisor.
You
may set up a personal file online at
CSU
Mentor, a comprehensive guide to the CSU campuses
(includes virtual tours).
See
the
CSU map for individual campuses.
To
find out what lower-division (freshman-sophomore) MAJOR
requirements to complete before transferring, go to ASSIST.
See General
Education requirements to transfer to a CSU.
Freshman-Sophomore General Education requirements for
transfer to a CSU as a junior can be completed using one
of two certification sheets:
Both
take the place of differing on-campus
requirements for universities, colleges, and majors.
How
do I decide whether to use IGETC or CSU GE to transfer to
a CSU?
-
The
CSU GE sheet can be partially certified* at Solano
Community College and completed at a CSU.
-
IGETC
must be fully completed with C grades or higher
before transfer, and certified* at Solano Community
College in place of the on-campus requirements
for different universities and majors.
-
See
a counselor for more information. Call
counseling at (707) 864-7101.
*Certified
means you will not be held to any further lower division
(freshman/sophomore) General Education after you transfer.
Apply to the
Office of Admissions and Records for certification
when the university requests your transcript.

How
can
I transfer to the University of California (UC) from
Solano Community College?
See
general information about transferring
to UC on the Counseling website,
UC
pathways, and
University of California homepage.
See
the UC
map for individual campuses.
Solano Community College courses numbered
1-49
transfer to UC. 60 transferable units are
required to transfer as a Junior (upper division
transfer). The maximum units that can be transferred for
credit is 70, although course credit can be given for
additional courses taken after 70 units. See a transfer
advisor.
To
complete the lower-division (Freshman-Sophomore) General
Education at Solano College before transfer to a UC, the
IGETC
agreement is most commonly used.
However, the IGETC is often not advisable for
high-unit majors such as Bioscience, Chemistry,
Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, etc. See
a counselor.
See
Instructions
for use of the IGETC Worksheet.
