CATALOG DESCRIPTION AND OTHER CATALOG INFORMATION
9a. Catalog Description:
An individualized skill-building keyboarding course taught on the microcomputer. Speed and accuracy skills are enhanced on the alphabet, punctuation, and numbers. The unit of study includes identifying the specific needs of the individual and then assigning diagnostic drills, skill-development practice and pre- and post-testing. The skill building goal will be to increase typing speed or straight copy 3- to 5-minute timed writings between 5 to 10 words per minute above the starting rate with an accuracy level of not more than one error per minute.

This is an open entry/open exit course.
   
10. Student Performance Objectives:
As a result of successful completion of this course, a student will be able to:

1. Demonstrate the understanding of methods, strategies, and sequence of drills needed to effect improved keyboard skill.
2. Demonstrate an improvement of 5-10 words per minute above the starting words per minute under timed conditions with an accuracy level of not more than 1 error per minute.
   
11. Methods of Evaluating Student Achievement:
Pre- and post-tests, diagnostic charts, evaluation of required drills, observations, and goal achievement will be required of students to demonstrate the increased keyboarding skills needed for school assignments, personal use, and professional office performance.
   
12. Student Assignments (Homework):
   
a. Required Reading Assignments:
Accuracy and speed building text--10-20 pages per week.
   
b. Required Writing Assignments:
Understanding, completing, and updating of diagnostic charts.

13. Course Content Outline:
The content of this course requires students to be able to analyze problem areas, evaluate and develop a learning sequencing, recognize effective concepts, and apply correct diagnostic and appraisal principles. Areas covered in each cycle include, but are not limited to:

I. Instructions
A. Read specific directions for use of computer program.
B. Review keystroking and positioning techniques.
C. Read and understand agenda of cycle activities.

II. Diagnostic
A. Do timings for diagnosis of accuracy, speed, and stroking.
B. Evaluate and graph timing results.

III. Drills
A. Do drills for accuracy including, but not limited to:
1. High-Stroke-Intensity Words
2. Alternate-Hand Words
3. Compound- and Multiple-Stroke Words
4. Vertical-Stroke Words
5. Double-Letter Words
6. Intensive Concentration Drills
B. Do drills for speed including, but not limited to:
1. Simple-Vocabulary Sentences
2. Alphabetic Sentences
3. Frequent-Spacing Sentences
4. Frequent-Shifting Sentences
5. One-Hand Word Sentences

In repeat cycles II and III students will continue to build skill and accuracy in the order listed in I. - III. above; performance standards will increase in rigor.
