9a. Catalog Description:
How to start and manage your own business. This course presents an overview of the process and steps involved in establishing a small business. Topics include entrepreneurial characteristics, success and failure factors, financing, management and business concerns, and developing a checklist for planning a start-up.

As a result of successful completion of this course, a student will be able to:

1. Identify the personal characteristics required to successfully start and manage a business.
2. Determine your motives and objectives in pursuing self-employment.
3. Determine the amount and source of capital needed to start a new business.
4. Identify the advantages and disadvantages of buying an existing business.
5. Identify the advantages and disadvantages of investing in a franchise.
6. Identify the basic management challenges you will encounter in running a business.
7. Understand the legal, tax, and insurance concerns in operating a business.
8. Develop guidelines for establishing business plans and goals.
9. Understand the use of a checklist in starting your business.
