Puente Project
The Puente Project is a national award-winning program that has improved the college-going rate of tens of thousands of California’s educationally underrepresented students for 40 years.
Its mission is to increase the number of educationally disadvantaged students who enroll in four-year colleges and universities, earn college degrees and return to the community as mentors and leaders to future generations. The program is interdisciplinary in approach, with writing, counseling and mentoring components.
Started in 1981 at Chabot Community College in Hayward, California, the program has since expanded to 4 middle schools, 38 high schools and 65 community colleges throughout California, as well as to programs in Texas and Washington state. Puente staff train middle school, high school and community college instructors and counselors to implement a program of rigorous instruction, focused academic counseling, and mentoring by members of the community. Puente’s staff training programs have benefited approximately 300,000 students across the state. Puente is open to all students.
Important Information
Puente students are part of a Cohort of students taking English and Counseling courses, building a sense of community with an emphasis on the Latino experience.
The Puente program helps students with study skills and staying on the right track to success. Puente provides opportunities to tour local CSU and UC campuses. They also assist in finding scholarships and connect students with a mentor in the community. The puente program is open to all students!
We are always looking for members of the community to mentor our students. Mentoring is a wonderful way to give back to your community and help shape the future by guiding a leader and mentor of tomorrow. To become a mentor, please complete the Puente Mentor Profile Information Sheet and email it to puente@solano.edu.
